When installing a vent-free gas log into a previous wood burning fireplace, we strongly recommend having a professional chimney sweep company clean the fireplace and chimney.   Ensure the firebox walls, flue and smoke shelf are clean of any soot or residue from previous wood burning.  Wipe the firebox with a mild solution of TSP and water.

When a vent-free set is used in a fireplace previously used for wood burning with the the damper closed, the built-up heat can release fumes and particles trapped in the soot in the firebox and chimney, resulting in unpleasant odors and perhaps soot into the room.
